What is the Significance of Ambient Air Quality Monitoring

Ambient air quality monitoring is important for determining the condition of various ambient gases. For instance, ambient air is the air we live in, and breathe day and night. Its contents and quality depends on our activities. Similarly, this air affects our health and the well-being of our ecosystem. 

There is a considerable impact from the chemical and industrial pollutants on the composition of air. Every time some industry emits harmful gases, or fumes, the ambient air is immediately affected. Aside from this, ambient air is also affected by the dust and dirt particles, smoke, pollen, and ashes.

The Environmental Protection Agency sets standards and also monitors the quality of air. This is done to ensure that humans and plant life can benefit from the clean air and can remain free from diseases that occur due to pollution. Six main pollutants have been tracked by the National Ambient Air Quality Standards. They are sulfur dioxide, ozone, lead, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide.

All these pollutants adversely affect the environment and living creatures. For each of these, extensive data is gathered and then compared with ambient air quality standards. These standards are updated regularly and indicate maximum safe level of each pollutant. When pollutants exceed this safe level, they will start producing unfavorable impact on environment and people. 

The ambient air quality monitoring is a sophisticated process and involves the collection of air samples and they are checked to see compliance and progress in meeting the set standards. It also helps in monitoring the trends in pollution in different regions.

The measurement of various air pollutants in specific areas is involved in the extensive ambient air quality monitoring network. Different regions of the country are kept under observation and air at these places is monitored regularly to see if it meets the objectives of this network. Sampling techniques, pollutants, frequency, duration, maintenance, infrastructural facilities, and operational costs are few factors that affect the results.
