Why Sulfur Dioxide Emissions require Measurement through so2 Analyzer

 SO2 or sulfur dioxide is used as a food grade preservative or an important compound in winemaking which must be regulated in accordance to the standards set by governments for the safety of the public. The so2 analyzer is used to measure fuel exhaust to control pollution of the environment. With the so2 analyzer, sulfur dioxide is detected from among the many gases present and will provide continuous updates whenever there are changes in its concentrations. Coal and petroleum contain sulfur compounds and during combustion sulfur dioxide is generated which is a cause for concern since sulfur dioxide is a potent gas for global warming.

The industrial applications of sulfur dioxide

  • Food preservative – owing to its antimicrobial properties, sulfur dioxide is used as a food preservative for apricots, figs and other dried fruits. It also maintains the colorful appearance of the fruit and at the same time prevents it from rotting. Although the total amount of sulfur dioxide is quite high in dried fruits, it does not require so2 analyzer since the nutritional benefits of dried fruits are much more significant to consumers than sulfur dioxide content. Mandatory warnings are not required on labels.
  • Winemaking – sulfur dioxide acts as an antioxidant and antibiotic for wine to prevent spoilage from bacteria and oxidation. However, it is essential to maintain safe and proper levels of sulfur dioxide which requires monitoring through so2 analyzer with its array of tests and equipment. During winemaking, the so2 analyzer allows for fast and safe decisions without the need for complex chemical methods or sending wine samples to external laboratories.
  • As reducing agent – in the presence of water, sulfur dioxide can decolorize substances so it is useful reducing bleach for paper and clothes. However, the bleaching effect does not last long since oxygen can easily re-oxidize the reduced dyes to restore its former color. In a wastewater treatment facility, sulfur dioxide is used to treat chlorinated water before it is released.

Sulfur dioxide as an air pollutant

Sulfur dioxide belongs to a group of highly reactive gases known as “oxides of sulfur”. The largest sources of so2 emissions are fossil fuel combustion from power plants while the less significant sources are industrial processes such as extracting metal from ore, burning of high sulfur containing fuel by vehicles and non-road equipment. Sulfur dioxide is linked to a number of negative effects to the respiratory system which requires the so2 analyzer to measure its emissions. One of the overall goals of the Acid Rain Program is to reduce the emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides to the environment for environmental and health safety.

The hazards of sulfur dioxide

High concentrations of sulfur dioxide can cause breathing problems for individuals with asthma. Short term exposure can lead to wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breathing. Significant environmental effects are acidified soil lakes and streams, accelerated corrosion of buildings and monuments and reduced visibility. Sulfur dioxide is also a major precursor of fine particulate soot which another threat to health.
